Conan O’Brien has been making some pretty rough jokes about Newark, which has led to a (mostly) mock feud between the late-night host and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

O’Brien joked that the mayor was establishing a program to improve the health of the city’s residents, then deadpanned: “The health care program would consist of a bus ticket out of Newark.”
He did a video bit in which he praised the city’s “thriving arts scene” (while showing a graffiti-scarred wall); its “four-star lodging” (shots of abandoned, gutted, rusting vehicles); and its “world-class live theater” (a peep show).
He threatened to form an alliance with the mayors of nearby municipalities, thus “creating a geographic toilet seat around the city of Newark,” making it possible to flush the city down the figurative bowl.
The mayor came up with his own YouTube videos in response and, believe it or not, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton weighed in at one point as a mock peace negotiator.
Conan seems like a nice fellow, and I doubt that he harbors any malice toward Newark. But he and his audience are having fun taunting a city that, like many others across the U.S., is in a desperately tragic situation: poverty-stricken, run down, often unsafe, its children and teenagers in too many instances going nowhere fast.
Whether it’s Newark, Detroit, parts of Chicago, South-Central Los Angeles, Camden, N.J. — take your pick — we’ve looked the other way for decades as the residents of hard-core inner-city neighborhoods struggled with overwhelming, life-threatening problems and a chronic shortage of resources, financial and otherwise.
We’re having an intense national debate over whether to move ahead with nation-building in Afghanistan and to continue protecting the population in places like Kabul and Kandahar while all but ignoring the violence that is consuming the lives of boys and girls in Chicago, America’s third-largest city.
Dozens of boys and girls of school-age and younger are murdered in Chicago every year. One hundred were killed there last year, according to the police. The blood of the young is spattered daily on the stoops, sidewalks and streets of American cities from coast to coast, and we won’t even take notice unless, *******for example, we can engage in the ghoulish delight of watching the murder played over and over again on video.*******
In Newark, where some of the streets do look as bad as the scenes that were part of Conan’s comedy bit, the unemployment rate is 14.7 percent. Keeping kids in high school long enough to graduate is difficult. Drug dealing is a fallback employment option for men and boys who can’t find legitimate work.
Other cities have the same problems, some to a greater degree. So what are we doing? While mulling the prospect of sending up to 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, we’ve stood idly by, mute as a stone, as school districts across the nation have bounced 40,000 teachers out of their jobs over the past year.
That should tell you all you need to know about twisted national priorities.
Even as teachers by the tens of thousands are walking the plank to unemployment, we’re learning, as The Times reported last week, that one in every 10 young male dropouts is locked up in jail or juvenile detention. As if that weren’t gruesome enough, we find that the figure for blacks is one in four. What would it take to get the perpetual crisis facing these young people onto the radar screens of the rest of America?
Conan was just trying to be funny, but the reality behind his late-night humor is horrifying. In Detroit, the median sale price of a house has hovered around $8,000. Seventy percent of all murders in the Motor City go unsolved. Joblessness is off the charts. The school system is a catastrophe.
I remember driving around Camden, which is right outside of Philadelphia, on a rainy afternoon. Young people with nothing to do — they had dropped out of school and had little or no chance of finding a job — were gathered on porches, saying little, staring the hours away. I had on a suit and was driving a nice car. More than one person that I approached thought I was either buying or selling drugs.
The inner cities have been in a recession for decades. They’re in a depression now. Myriad issues desperately need to be addressed: employment, education, the foreclosure crisis, crime, alcohol and drug abuse, health care (including mental health treatment and counseling), child care for working parents and on and on and on.
Conan’s jokes would carry a silver lining if they could somehow prompt more people to think more seriously about what’s really going on in cities like Newark.

Air National Guard, opinions on joining in my situation?
Okay, so I really wanted to be a soldier since I was little but having a kid sidetracked me and I went to college instead. I am still in college 1 1/2 - 2 years left, wife is in college with same time frame left, have a four year old son, and wife is having another boy mid-summer.
I wouldn't be able to go to BASIC until next summer most likely without creating a major bind on my wife, our child care, or educational situation. Financially things are getting tight but should be able to sustain as long as nothing big happens with/after the pregnacy.
We both really want to contain and finish our education, I am a Geography major, Anthropology minor, and working on a G.I.S. Certificate. I would really like some real life experience in the Geographic/GIS area. There are two locations in Montana about three hours away that are ANG, and I could commute the once a week no problem. They are the 120th Fighter Wing and the 219th Red Horse Squadron.
I was hoping to join the ANG, get the signing bonus as close to the $20,000 as possible, the tuition assistance, healthcare benefits as I am uninsured (wife and son are though), and the $150-$200 monthly check. I place a high priority on my family and want to make things better, not worse... would enlisting be a good option?Air National Guard, opinions on joining in my situation?
After 7 years in the ANG I think I can give you some good advice here.
You say you ahve always wanted to be in the military since you were a kid so your reasons for joining are valid and good. The extra income and benefits are nice too, but you have to want to be in to be successful, which it sounds like you do. The ANG will allow you to wait up to one year from date of enlistment to leave for BMT/Tech school. This means you would meet with recruiters and enlist June/July(depending on medical waivers, etc, if needed). You have until next summer to leave if you did this. You still attend monthly drill weekends before you go to BMT which is called the student flight. They teach you stuff about BMT and the Air Force which will greatly enhance your ability to do well in BMT. You get paid about $180 take home each drill up to BMT. You time in service towards your 6 years also starts the day you enlist, so you would be an E-3 for a year before going to BMT. When you get done with training, you will be able to put on E-4 very soon afterwards.
As far as your family situation.......you will have to be gone from them for your training period which all depends on what job you take as to how long this period is. You will miss tiem with them, but you will also be brining home about $1400 every two weeks, plus $250/month for family seperation allowance, which you DO get in BMT and tech school. Your family is also covered(for free) under health insurance during your active duty training time. Once you are back from training an part-time again in the ANG, full health insurance is $145/month for you and your family. Its TRICARE insurance so it is good stuff. My friend joined the ANG last year with 2 year old twin boys and a 5 year old girl and loves it. Its tough being away from family, but in the end, it is VERY worth it. You will maike money while learning a new skill and get the priviledge to serve this great country. It is a short 6 years and at that time, either stay in or get out and say thanks for the experience. I beleive you will find the ANG to be much different than how you think it will be, all this in a good way of course. I have helped a lot of people in the ANG, and not one has ever had anything but a tthank you to say to me. Email me if you are serious about joining. I will answer questions you and your wife may have and shoot it straight.night cream

Brother's and Sister's - What is are your favorite activities or hobbies, outside of Theocratic activities?
What do you enjoy most outside of Field Service, going to the meeting etc? What hobbies and interests do you have?
Personally, I LOVE to dance - mostly Salsa, Bachata and Merengue at the moment.
I also enjoy drawing and sketching.
I also LOVE to compose music, play the piano/guitar, record music, music mixing engineering, and playing around with Virtual Instruments (VST's DXi's) and programming my own sound fonts. (kinda nerdy maybe)
I like training dogs and learning about animals in general.
I also have a keen interest in documentaries. And as a direct result I enjoy the History Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery, National Geographic etc.

I enjoy meeting new people (preferably the female version - lol, just kidding....but I do)
I enjoy spending time with my family who are all from Lousiana (New Orleans - that mighty 9th to be exact) so we talk loud, play spades and eat crawfish until.......there are no more crawfish to eat.)
I also enjoy driving and dancing (as mentioned) so as a result I like to skate, lol- its the best of both worlds.
I also like acquiring 'unorthodox pets' Fire Ants, like Black Widow spiders, a Bat, and a very large Preying Mantis. (hey, you learn alot)
I also enjoy visiting different congregations and meeting new friends, but I guess that would be a theocratic activity.

I like Basketball, Soccer and Tennis (although I have not played in a while).
Well, What about you? What do you enjoy?|||This is a fun question! I love doing so many different things. So here we go:
- Salsa music is one of my favourite to listen AND dance to....love it, love it, love it. Bachata is cool too....and merengue...Cumbia is fun.

-LOVE to cook and make up new recipes...as well as bake.
-Working out, going hiking, biking.
-Playing volleyball (and beach volleyball), basketball.
-Love travelling...especially going to a tropical beach place.
-Swimming
-I enjoy playing with my niece! I just love her laugh.
-Enjoy spending time with my family, having BBQ's and chilling on the patio.
-Making the garden look nice...but don't enjoy weeding even though I have no choice lol.
-Love hanging out with my friends, having them over and making lots of yummy things for them, too.
-Watching chick-flicks...yeah yeah go ahead and make fun lol.
-Playing computer games to wind down...sometimes.
-Going for nice drives in the countryside.
-I used to play music (drums, baritone, keyboard), but now I'm rusty. But the rhythm's still there. My drums are my fingers, hands and feet haha.
-I like doing arts and crafts such as ceramics, graphic design, etc.
-Sorry unlike you, I won't acquire such unorthordox pets LOL...NO SIR, not what you mentioned...unless they're in jar and I don't have to handle them. I used to do that to check out what they're like. But that's the extent of it.
-I also enjoy keeping in touch with long time friends and those who live far away. Nothing like re-connecting with loved ones.
............and I could list on and on! I know I've forgotten somethings.|||I have a Great Dane, his name is Zeb and I like going to the beach with him. He likes to play soccer with us. Great fun!|||I enjoy doing a little fishing, kind of nice to be outside along a stream.

What does my school teacher keep confiscating my books?
I'm 10 years old and in grade school at a christian school and the teachers keep taking my books which I love reading. Reading creates a picture in my head that helps me escape the modern world. They did a random inspection of my locker because some kid dobbed on me because I prefer to read than sit with him and watch TV and took away books that I had been reading calling them "vile", "wretched" and "unclean for pure minds". There were some Twilight books and Harry Potter novels which they said were "demonic" and could lead me down a path that is "unwholesome".
There were a few others that they took too saying they were too violent for me such as "Of Mice and Men", "Catch-22" and "Romeo and Juliet". They even took my National Geographic DVD's which explain about how penguins live in the Antarctic saying I didn't need them because I would never go there anyway. I'm at boarding school so I can't go home and tell my parents either. What should I do?What does my school teacher keep confiscating my books?
RIDICULOUS.
My teachers would have been proud if I read.
Call your parents.
Stand up for yourself and talk to the teachers like an adult.
They are trying to control you. Don't let them.
Call your parents maybe?
OR even look up school rules and see what books they ban.
Technically, if the books and dvds they took aren't on the list they have to give them back.What does my school teacher keep confiscating my books?
Im really sorry to hear that. Such a sad thing to have something you love taken away like that. Im catholic and we can be pretty strict on stuff like that too. Why cant you tell your parents? Will they be mad that you had them or will you be in more trouble at school? I think they would have to give them back when you go home if not you should tell your parents at least to find a way to get them even if that means they have to take them home. If you choose to continue to read stuff like that try hiding the books from everyone, maybe under a mattress? Its just school rules even though they suck.What does my school teacher keep confiscating my books?
Why can't you tell your parents? Call or email them or something..
PS. They don't want you to have your escape because they want control over you and your mind.
Wow. Your school is ridiculous. Definitely look up the rules and your rights. Talk to your teacher about it if you can and ask them why they find it so distasteful. Try writing a letter to the head of your school explaining why you want to read the books and why you feel they're worth reading. And try to contact your parents. If your school is trying to limit you like this, you'd be better off someplace else in my opinion. Good luck!

Recurring dream that I have breasts for fingers? Please analyze?
I'm not even kidding. The first time I had this dream, I was still in highschool. I've had it at least once a year since, for the past, oh...11 years now? I had the dream again this morning.
In my dream, I have 5 breasts flopping around on each hand instead of fingers. They are not big porn-star breasts, but the small, flat, saggy kind like you see on the women in National Geographic magazines (except they're white in my dream).
I don't remember much else except there's always a part where I'm fumbling to get change out of a little zippered change purse with my big breast-y fingers, and the cashier and people in line are getting frustrated with me.
What does it all mean?Recurring dream that I have breasts for fingers? Please analyze?
you're a lezzie
Hm, i really have no idea. i'll try looking it up though:
Your dream body represents your dream ego and your conscious identity. Specific body parts are only significant if they are different than usual. In some cases, your dream may forewarn of health problems/concerns of that particular body part.
Breasts
To see breasts in your dream, symbolizes primal nourishment and your need to be nursed and care for. It represent motherhood, nurturance, and infantile dependency. Alternatively, breasts represents sexual arousal and raw energy.
Seeing naked breasts can also denote a feeling of exposure and invasion of privacy. In particular, for a woman, the dream may indicate anxieties about becoming a woman/mother.

National Geographic Geography Bee?
Okay, my best guy friend, Jake, is a finalist in the Florida National Geographic Bee, and is studying for his competition. If he wins, he goes to the Nationals in DC, so we're all helping him study as much as we can.
The problem is, all pf the questions that I try to ask him, he's always already heard them. So, does anybody (kids, past compeditors, teachers, etc.) have any more questions that Jake may not have already answered? Thanks!!!!!
Also, any ideas on what for him to expect at the state level competition?National Geographic Geography Bee?

Photography as an Art Form?
This obnoxious kid got pissed at me because I said "I like how anyone that can operate a DSLR these days is a Photographer" in a sarcastic manner, meaning that Photography is a current trend and a lot of teens are doing it because it's "cool". I didn't actually say this to him but made it my Facebook status and he got pissed off because he had just bought a new SLR and it applied pretty heavily to him.
Anyway, he pretty much said I was a pretentious hipster (which I'm not) and that I "just can't take the fact that anyone can take a picture and be an artist". This royally pissed me off but I was polite because at the time I couldn't think of anything offensive to say back without sounding like an idiot
Anyway, the reasons I think photography is a poor art form is because:
A. No creativity. When you take a photo, you’re using a tool to save a copy of a scene even if that scene is incredibly beautiful. Now the exception is if you use certain lighting and editing techniques to make the photo genuinely original.
B. Anyone can do it. Especially with today’s auto-focusing, auto-metering, easy-to-use cameras, meaning that a lot of idiots an pick up an SLR and pretend to be a great artist.
C. No talent involved. You’re in a good place, you take a good picture. You’re in a bad place; you get nothing. It doesn’t matter if you have passion or willpower. If someone else is in the right place at the right time, they can easily capture the moment just as well, even if they’ve been handed a camera for the first time.
D. It's usually completely Literal, metaphors and ideology can be illustrated much better through painting, drawing, or music.
E. If you make money off of taking photo's (for National Geographic as an example), then your not an artist, you're a businessman.
Now there are some exceptions, there are photographers who create their own scenes, like my friend for example. He sets up certain themes and uses models to depict said themes, he uses editing and light effects and all that deliciousness. I think he's a great artist, but that's because he's creating something new, not just digitally saving a scene.
I think the reason that Photography has caught on is because anyone born with arms can do it. The same can be said about painting or drawing or music, but those require months or even years of Practice and a more metaphorical message can be conveyed through them.
Now, I'm not trying to be a jerk, and I know there are a lot of Great photographers out there, but I think a lot of people are doing it just to be hip and happening.
So, what's your opinion? And you can be critical, just don't be a complete asshole.|||I will reserve judgment of your comments until I see a link to some examples of your photography. Until that time, I will assume that you are simply uninformed.
No - one comment for now. If Rembrandt sold his paintings to buy dinner, does that mean that he was a businessman and not an artist? I deal with gallery artists ALL THE TIME and they are all selling their work. This does not make them businessmen to the exclusion of being artists. An artist has to be a good businessman if he/she wants to continue to create art. Even paint isn't free.
~~~
I think maybe we misread you position. You did say that your original comment was sarcastic, so I think that perhaps you agree with most of the answers here.
You certainly capture the essence of what most of your detractors are saying when you talk about your friend who anticipates the scene and creates something new. Simply pointing a camera at something and pushing a button is not creating art. That is merely recording reality. At times, ANYONE can come up with an esthetically pleasing version of reality. I admit it. I do this at times. One of my "most artistic" images was a total fluke. This shot was totally accidental. I didn't have the camera to my eye and I didn't even mean to press the shutter button. In spite of that, I think it captures some of the color and excitement of professional motorcycle racing. To say that the girl in the background is "wide-eyed with anticipation" is an understatement. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei… This proves that even a monkey could come up with a decent picture under the right circumstances and given a certain amount of luck.
A lot of what I shoot is journalistic, but I try to give the public an alternate way of viewing something - when that is appropriate.
Back to creating an image... My handle here pokes fun at the ego of a lot of kidz who think they are ready to sell pictures or serve as the photographer at their cousin's wedding within a week after buying a DSLR. Much of the time, I am simply a picture taker. I know that I will get exactly what I want about 99% of the time, because I understand the mechanics of photography. When I cover an event, I pre-plan a lot of what I shoot. To a degree that is the first step in creating art. That sets me (and many others here) apart from the obnoxious kid who thinks he has already surpassed the great photographers in history because he occasionally gets lucky with his camera. (pun intended) Even when covering an auto race, I need to think about where to position myself at different times of the day to not only capture the action, but to take advantage of the background, the natural lighting - which changes throughout the day, the fan reaction, and any number of other factors that are beyond my control. Pre-planning will make a difference between my shots and those of a rank amateur, though.
Well, I am trying to avoid a rant here and I think you get it. I think your question has produced some insightful answers. Maybe that was even your intention in the first place.
For what it's worth, I started tagging some of my stuff "is this art" for discussions such as this. You won't like some of this, but some of it will probably appeal to you. Who knows. Out of over 100 images, there is only one that is totally dumb luck. A couple are "educated luck." The rest are all images that required forethought and technical understanding on my part. Glance at the thumbnails and, even with a question as subjective as "Is this art?" I think you'll find at least a couple that you enjoy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei…|||What a nice comment! I hope everyone who was following this question comes back to read it. I'll pass it along to my friends.
|||The fact that you couldn't think of anything to say back for fear of sounding like an idiot should have lead you to do some research on the subject, and actually learned enough to come here and post intelligent questions to increase your understanding rather than post ill-conceived statements. It doesn't sound like you or your friend have any knowledge of the subject you are discussing.
Do you have a question?|||Yes, it's an art form. Even camera phone photography or (original mono screen, white brick) Gameboy camera photography.
Maybe your question was meant to read something like... "Is all photography GOOD art?"
1. I am seeing this 14 hours after posting, and I have found they typically answers get ignored by the asker after a few hours.
2. You already have some great answers and I would basically be repeating them.
I will just add this. You actually make good some good points. Where I feel your largest shortcoming is understanding the differences between a skilled photographer / artist and the average Joe Blow camera toting button pusher. From digesting your statements, I feel you think there is a fine line between these two types. That is where you are wrong. There is not a fine line, ..... there is a canyon, a gulf, a universe separating them!
Photography does give the majority of people a chance to enter into an artistic medium, but so does painting or sculpting or drawing or glass blowing for that matter. It is just much easier to buy and carry a camera. But the single act of having a camera does not in any way magically enable that person to take, and certainly not create, a great photograph. It is an acquired skill that takes study and practice like any other.
I will close with this. I often go out of my way to find places that are NOT "good" for photography. This is where creativity and skill and camera control come into play, ... to try to create something out of nothing. Also, many of these have sold and been on display in various art galleries, but that most surely does not make me a "businessman". I would have starved years ago if I had to survive on what photos I sell. lol
Anyway, here are some samples of photography that tends to contradict much of your points. These were all taken with a cheap toy camera on film, and I can promise you, it is not something that everyone can do if they were holding the exact same camera:
steve|||I suggest answering your question by yourself. Purchase or borrow a camera and see how easy it is to take those pictures that anyone can take. If you don't post a photo which I could say is art, does that mean it isn't good art to you or someone else?
I have met some artists who detested their favorite medium when they were young(er) and your strong dislike for photography as a credible art form could come from a hidden desire to take masterpiece photos.
Hey, many stranger things have happened ~
Lastly, if you're not into it, don't spoil something for someone else when you don't have to. I agree with some of the content in your question but having opinions is no excuse for rude behavior. I am glad you posted here to get it off your chest.|||yes its an art form.... now yes everyone things there a professional photographer but obviously there photos will prove otherwise if there not. most teens are just amateurs but there are some teens who are already working as a photographer doing weddings.|||A. When you paint a landscape, you're using a tool to recreate that landscape! How you interpret that landscape in the medium you've chosen is what makes you an artist. I'm a photographer that's used film %26amp; digital for 35+ years and I use the camera as a tool to not only capture moments but also in a creative way. But then again I use light creatively %26amp; don't shoot on Auto anything - I decide exposure.
B. You have a good point %26amp; it's true that photography in the digital age has led to a LOT of mediocre photography because it is relatively cheap %26amp; easy. But if all you do is point %26amp; shoot, then you end up with average pictures. Notwithstanding what settings you camera is on (Auto or Manual), a GOOD image that makes you stop %26amp; stare still has visual impact, and that means either in subject matter, or it's conforming to the artistic rules of composition (which is where most newbies to photography fall down).
C. I disagree with this - being in a great place doesn't make a great picture necessarily. There's plenty of cr@p examples of pretty places! It just might mean you take the same picture as everybody else that stood there. The artistic side (%26amp; what requires some effort) is being at that place %26amp; seeing it differently, or taking the time to see it when others don't.
D. I disagree - photography has always been the basis for some artists on which to build a visual art work, through image manipulation, either digitally or by standard darkroom techniques.
E. Again I think this point is a nonsense - there are plenty of artists I know in various media that sell their work.
I think you are generalising between photography and GOOD photography. Sure, 'anyone can do it', but it takes skill, knowledge %26amp; talent to do it WELL. There is also the difference between pure 'record' photography (where an accurate record of a scene is required) and artistic photography.
Or to put it another way - it's the difference between TAKING a photograph and MAKING a photograph.
You do make an entirely valid point though about the plethora of (principally) teen photographers who buy a camera, take snapshots %26amp; think they're an 'artist' or even a good photographer. Everything on Auto, no thought to composition, Dutch tilt, converse trainers %26amp; post processed to hell %26amp; gone - we see 'em all on here. And boy, do they get arsey when you try to tell them.
But don't disregard the rest of us, who have been honing our craft for years. Oh and for the record, I do not consider myself an artist - just a photographer!
Anyway, he pretty much said I was a pretentious hipster (which I'm not) and that I "just can't take the fact that anyone can take a picture and be an artist". This royally pissed me off but I was polite because at the time I couldn't think of anything offensive to say back without sounding like an idiot
Anyway, the reasons I think photography is a poor art form is because:
A. No creativity. When you take a photo, you’re using a tool to save a copy of a scene even if that scene is incredibly beautiful. Now the exception is if you use certain lighting and editing techniques to make the photo genuinely original.
B. Anyone can do it. Especially with today’s auto-focusing, auto-metering, easy-to-use cameras, meaning that a lot of idiots an pick up an SLR and pretend to be a great artist.
C. No talent involved. You’re in a good place, you take a good picture. You’re in a bad place; you get nothing. It doesn’t matter if you have passion or willpower. If someone else is in the right place at the right time, they can easily capture the moment just as well, even if they’ve been handed a camera for the first time.
D. It's usually completely Literal, metaphors and ideology can be illustrated much better through painting, drawing, or music.
E. If you make money off of taking photo's (for National Geographic as an example), then your not an artist, you're a businessman.
Now there are some exceptions, there are photographers who create their own scenes, like my friend for example. He sets up certain themes and uses models to depict said themes, he uses editing and light effects and all that deliciousness. I think he's a great artist, but that's because he's creating something new, not just digitally saving a scene.
I think the reason that Photography has caught on is because anyone born with arms can do it. The same can be said about painting or drawing or music, but those require months or even years of Practice and a more metaphorical message can be conveyed through them.
Now, I'm not trying to be a jerk, and I know there are a lot of Great photographers out there, but I think a lot of people are doing it just to be hip and happening.
So, what's your opinion? And you can be critical, just don't be a complete asshole.|||I will reserve judgment of your comments until I see a link to some examples of your photography. Until that time, I will assume that you are simply uninformed.
No - one comment for now. If Rembrandt sold his paintings to buy dinner, does that mean that he was a businessman and not an artist? I deal with gallery artists ALL THE TIME and they are all selling their work. This does not make them businessmen to the exclusion of being artists. An artist has to be a good businessman if he/she wants to continue to create art. Even paint isn't free.
~~~
I think maybe we misread you position. You did say that your original comment was sarcastic, so I think that perhaps you agree with most of the answers here.
You certainly capture the essence of what most of your detractors are saying when you talk about your friend who anticipates the scene and creates something new. Simply pointing a camera at something and pushing a button is not creating art. That is merely recording reality. At times, ANYONE can come up with an esthetically pleasing version of reality. I admit it. I do this at times. One of my "most artistic" images was a total fluke. This shot was totally accidental. I didn't have the camera to my eye and I didn't even mean to press the shutter button. In spite of that, I think it captures some of the color and excitement of professional motorcycle racing. To say that the girl in the background is "wide-eyed with anticipation" is an understatement. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei… This proves that even a monkey could come up with a decent picture under the right circumstances and given a certain amount of luck.
A lot of what I shoot is journalistic, but I try to give the public an alternate way of viewing something - when that is appropriate.
Back to creating an image... My handle here pokes fun at the ego of a lot of kidz who think they are ready to sell pictures or serve as the photographer at their cousin's wedding within a week after buying a DSLR. Much of the time, I am simply a picture taker. I know that I will get exactly what I want about 99% of the time, because I understand the mechanics of photography. When I cover an event, I pre-plan a lot of what I shoot. To a degree that is the first step in creating art. That sets me (and many others here) apart from the obnoxious kid who thinks he has already surpassed the great photographers in history because he occasionally gets lucky with his camera. (pun intended) Even when covering an auto race, I need to think about where to position myself at different times of the day to not only capture the action, but to take advantage of the background, the natural lighting - which changes throughout the day, the fan reaction, and any number of other factors that are beyond my control. Pre-planning will make a difference between my shots and those of a rank amateur, though.
Well, I am trying to avoid a rant here and I think you get it. I think your question has produced some insightful answers. Maybe that was even your intention in the first place.
For what it's worth, I started tagging some of my stuff "is this art" for discussions such as this. You won't like some of this, but some of it will probably appeal to you. Who knows. Out of over 100 images, there is only one that is totally dumb luck. A couple are "educated luck." The rest are all images that required forethought and technical understanding on my part. Glance at the thumbnails and, even with a question as subjective as "Is this art?" I think you'll find at least a couple that you enjoy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei…|||What a nice comment! I hope everyone who was following this question comes back to read it. I'll pass it along to my friends.

What path(s) should I take in my life?
I'm turning 26 in a couple of days and although I'm feel better about myself than I've ever been in over a decade I really don't know what to do with my life.
My parents growing up were more preoccupied with their own martial problems than raising myself and my younger sister. Growing up I had shown small visages of success (in the form of academics, GREAT grades in Physical education at school, etc) but the vast majority of the time - 80% - I was was just "surviving". Getting to the next grade so that I can simply "keep up with society".
This trend continue through my undergrad years, simply surviving with "decent" grades yet I had suffered numerous personal and social blunders with my friends and fellow professional peers at my college (due to the social cues that I had "learned" in my childhood). They continue on today.
Now in the beginning of my adulthood I feel that if I continue the trend of the past I will not last long at all. I feel that I will simply be worn out before my 30s.
...Which brings me to the question: What kind of paths should I go? My question is leaning towards a professional career, but I will accept any serious answer(s).
For professions, as a kid ALL I wanted to be was in the military - Air Force or Navy in particular. That passion died out once I entered junior high and since then I have NOT had any passion for any career field. Sure I've wanted to be a (and for some still want to) journalist, teacher (I'm in a teaching program at the moment), National Geographic reporter, martial artist, etc. But circumstances such as family finances, lack of willpower, situations, etc prevented me from trying out any of these.
Back to the present; I feel like now I can only do what I NEED to do instead of what I want to do - the stuff to be a responsible, independent, and success adult and the things I want to do. The list for the latter appears to be shrinking by the month. What should I do?
ThanksWhat path(s) should I take in my life?
I am in a similar place as you, although I am 18. I think you should finish your teaching degree so at LEAST you have that. Then maybe find a job substituting or part time teaching. And once you get used to that see if you enjoy that, if its not fulfilling your happiness maybe look at other things you like- dig deep and find out who you really are. For me I grew up KNOWING I wanted to be a hairstylist, then my last year of highschool I wanted nothing to do with that, now I am looking into online colleges for photography. I guess you just have to guess what you will be into...sucks. I guess my advice to you is to just. Go against the grain and do what makes you happy, it'll be super hard once you try- but after a while you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner. I wish you the best of luck- always remember its okay to make mistakes. :)

Do you think I have an eidetic/photographic memory?
My grandfather had the most amazing memory. For example, if you asked him a question about, say, a specific military coup in the 1970s, he would give you a very detailed answer, and then say, "go downstairs to my magazine/book collection. Take the 1975 issue of National Geographic, page 36, about halfway down the page, in the second paragraph. The information is there."
I'm not kidding.
I've always had a better memory than most. For example, I know so many random facts about everything. It annoys people, but I can retain statistics and facts with ease. I study for tests just to be sure I am prepared sometimes, but I know that I don't really need to. My grades are impeccable as a result of this, 97 or above in all classes.
If I don't know an answer off the top of my head, I think back to my notes or my book and I "see" the info on the page. Sometimes I can actually read it, sometimes I can't and my brain just "knows" what it says there. When I can't remember how to spell a word, I visualize the word in my head in order to spell it.
I play instruments, and when I memorize music, most of it is thinking back to the sheet music. I cannot read the entire page, but I can definitely see a lot of it, mostly the first and last few lines.
Math formulas have always been easy. I literally see those in my head written out.
I can see rooms exactly how they look in my head. For instance, my preschool (keep in mind, I haven't been in there in over a decade) had this grey spiral staircase that led up to this dark green carpeted room with little specks of blue in it. There were grey elevators, and then the halls were painted this beige color and they led to to bunch of rooms on the left side. There was one classroom, then a bathroom(girls on the right, boys on the left), then another room, then there was a 90 degree turn to another room, then a stretch of about 10 feet, then an office...I could go on and on and describe all the rooms that were in that building that I had been into. I have more detailed recollections of rooms that I have been in more recently.
I only doubt I have one because I don't have the memory skills at all to the extent of my grandfather, as well as sometimes I just completely cannot remember something that I should, like where I put my book. I also don't read a page from memory and can recite it word for word, though my retention of the information itself is spot on.
So, do you think I have one? Why or why not? If so, do I have a very strong memory for someone with a photographic memory, or not?

There was one classroom, then a bathroom(girls on the right, boys on the left), then another room, then there was a 90 degree turn to another room, then a stretch of about 10 feet, then an office...I could go on and on and describe all the rooms that were in that building that I had been into. I have more detailed recollections of rooms that I have been in more recently.
I only doubt I have one because I don't have the memory skills at all to the extent of my grandfather, as well as sometimes I just completely cannot remember something that I should, like where I put my book. I also don't read a page from memory and can recite it word for word, though my retention of the information is spot on.
So, do you think I have one? Why or why not? If so, do I have a very strong memory for someone with a photographic memory, or not?
Thank you.Do I have a photographic memory?
Hey, I can do the same thing (except I do honestly have to study a bit harder for tests, although I also do that page thing.) I mean, I can do pretty much everything you said you can do. I doubt it's really photographic memory (although I have no explanation about your grandfather) but I'll bet you have a reasonably high IQ.
I picked it up on a whim, sitting with its akward looking encyclopedia fa?ade on the bookshelf. I could only estimate its total volume as about 500 pages. Maybe I was looking for some salvation via a non-fiction called I know this much is true.” I hadnt picked up a novel from a library in nearly two years. Instead of offering its sacrificial message of marytrism through the eyes of man who’s brother was schitzophrenic, it reminded me of when I was just a small kid.
Sunny, almost blinding, I could see the swing set across the gravel set play ground. I could have only been about five years old. Swinging low, and higher and higher tempting flipping over the bar. As children, it was almost like testing satan himself. Nonetheless, the rocking still continued, up, down, then sway down again. The entrancing movement refracted and siloutted against the sun, stopping at the moment the swing and the person reached the sunlight like a perfectly formed photograph. It seemed like something I would see on an advertisement in a National Geographic magazine, next to the article on human poverty in Africa. The wind started to pick up, and snow that was still dotted precariously about the ground was jettisoned by the wind to another location amougst the dusty dirt and gravel mixture of the earth floor. The gust only seemed to intensify the swingset’s gravity pulling and pushing with some invisible speed as to give the person riding it a new thrill to be part of the free mountain breeze. The sun appeared that it was glaring now, almost to bright for a child’s eyes. Then, the great feeling suddenly abated, and the swinger’s pace slowed. A sense of urgency and a slight hand of panic ingulfed the atmosphere. You could feel yourself geering and hoping, almost praying that the swinger could rise against the elements and show temptation to reach the top bar again, to keep swinging higher and higher. Inthrawled in the struggle of good vs. nature, I inched unknowingly closer. Shoes slowly inched towrd the remote ground filled with gravel. Popping a exploding out of their safe little spots on the ground, dusty rocks and pebbles flew towards my face. My heart skipped, and I quickly shut my eyes. My mistake. I could see the intensity of the sun through my closed eyelids, as it quickly seemed to set and I felt the soft salt smelling pebbles under my head. Eyes opened up towards the sky , fixed on the most peculiar shade of blue the sky had taken form to. The dark bitter color of the pine trees put cracks in the sky above me. I heard the swing’s lonely creaking of one that had no owner. I think I realized what had happened, but the sky caught my gaze for the longest time. I laid there for God only knows how long until I heard the familiar crunching of gravel under someone’s feet. I could tell it was someone musch larger than a child’s. It was the uglist, plaid, down padded coat I had ever seen. She towered over me as a shadow, a giant against the crooked and blurred after image of the playground. She stepped closer to me, the five year old in a purple bloated fur lined coat, courtesy of my mother. At first she didn’t say anything, juts looked down at me, trying to configure whether I was concious or not. Her frizzy long hair blocked from her face by the lifted sunglasses that looked like beetle eyes. Before she could ask the usually ask the teacher’s usually battery of questions like “are you okay?” etc I sat up ignoring the of toned blue sky. The teacher murmered something and then helped me stand up and clearly irritated asked me to go to the nurse’s office. She waddled off, obviously even more agitated to resume her duties. I didn’t get up, I jus sat and watched and listened as the noise had shifted from the swings to the other side of the playground. Kids really are reckless. I still don’t understanf why I came back to that memory of my childhood. Maybe the image of the children on the cover of novel made me reflect on the childhood memories of y own, or the emotion I connect ot myself when I read books.Please Critique! So some ppls taek yahoo answers too seriously?
i notice in the yahoo answers category lots of the ppl r liek, this is a serious website, this a website o give knowledge to other ppl, and to seek adice etc etc etc
wellllll,,, i think this site is mostly for young kid to play around and tell joke.
i think those who take the website very serisously r blind 2 the reality of wut this site has become
i am sure these ppl mean well, but they are in denial abt the true nature of YAOO ANSERS. i think if they want serious website they shud leae and go to a webstie for grownups liek national geographic or thing liek that
do u agree or disagree, pls?So some ppls taek yahoo answers too seriously?
I think you need to read the rules. If you read the rules then you would know that what you posted is a rant and chat and in violation of the rules. No one cares what some kid thinks. This is a site that was designed to give answers to questions to provide knowledge. It is not some dumb site for little children to play games. It is not a babysitter.
Y/A is just really for anyone that wants to have a Y/A answers account.
Id they want to take things seriously or jokingly, its just how they see it in their perspective.
The true nature of Yahoo Answers is that we are answering by what us Y/A users
think what is right even if we are being crude or kind.So some ppls taek yahoo answers too seriously?
disagree.
jokes are common and they don't bother me at all but around half of the people using this site do take it seriously and ask and give serious questions and answers. Jokes add comic relief and are fine, but they're not the purpose of this website. Have you ever looked at the health sections? Those are serious if you needed an example.So some ppls taek yahoo answers too seriously?
I disagree. This site is supposed to help people find serious answers to their serious questions, even though you may find stupid questions or answers from adults, who behave like brats.ink refills

The recession has caused many people problems in starting their careers. Your original interest in the Air Force or Navy may be a good choice at this time as you would receive training while earning your way in life. In four years when your enlistment is up the economy should be in a much better position and you will have training and experience which should lead to a career. Good Luck

Don't you think this is ridiculously rude? Really?
You HAVE to read this..

This article really struck me and made me really angry, especially when I read the comments. Why doesn't a great actress deserve to be on the cover of Elle? Everyone is beautiful in their own way.
This one comment on the article really bothered me. I can't believe people are really THIS rude.
"Are you kidding me? Sorry. She is not beautiful. What in the world was Elle thinking when they put her face on the cover? She should be on the cover of national geographic... specifically an issue about gorillas."Don't you think this is ridiculously rude? Really?
it is just them being creative and now people are over reacting
or she didnt fit on the cover
damn. i don't think shes particularly attractive by any means but thats harsh.Don't you think this is ridiculously rude? Really?
I think everyone is beautiful until they prove themselves not to be. She is beautiful, and I am happy she is gracing the cover of Elle. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
People are just stupid hicks. You can't really do anything about it other than shake your head and be happy you aren't that flat out rude and ignorant as them.Don't you think this is ridiculously rude? Really?
That's sick. They just wish they were as successful and gorgeous as Gabby Sidibe.
Ugh! This is so horrible. I can't believe people would say that about a talented actress like her. And she's really pretty actually. Am I the only one who thinks that? I certainly hope not. It just irks me that people would say that she doesn't deserve to be on the cover. People who say those things about people don't deserve to be on this Earth
That's disgusting. I'm ashamed of the world.
It's pretty pathetic and hateful but think about it, racism has been around for ages...and there will and won't be people who believe in it. In my opinion, everyone's pretty in their own way because we were made specially. But I don't believe you should be so mad at this...I mean it was one comment from some loser on the internet.
I think the article itself is being stupid. I doubt they tried to make her face lighter. It was most likely the lighting of the room and the airbrushing that was done; EVERYONE looks paler on magazines whether they're white or black or green or orange.
The comments are rude. She's talented and definitely deserves that cover :)
And why the **** would she bring in the gorilla comment? That's just... uncalled for. Like... I don't even know what to say except that I think I'm going to make a "smack these hos in the face list" and she's going to be Number 1 on it.
Wow I just had something like this sorta today some people I know do this insult game worst/best if you get what I mean and one called the other the name of a great but sorta unattractive musician and the other said you win and I was mad because we live in a society were people are judged by looks and not intelligence, personality, and talent or things that are important.
That is truly a horrible thing to say about such a beautiful and talented actress like her.
They put beautifully girls on the cover of magazines to sell them. This is common knowledge. You have the right to be mad, but your anger is just plain dumb.
Horrible, horrible, horrible. I don't understand how humans can treat one another so horribly. We're all human. I just don't get it.
That's rude.
They deserve to be on the cover of National Geographic in an article about a 'New, not-so-rare, kind of Douchebag found in the Amazon Rainforest'.
That IS rude.
The person who made that comment will never, ever be as pretty as Gabourey Sidibe.
That is so nasty and whoever wrote that comment should be ashamed! I really hope that they get back wat they dished.
AHAHAH i legit lol'd at the comment and no that mag is for the prettyiest of pretty girls and well she is not.
we all need to suck up our self esteem and continue on after all it is just life
EDIT- liken the thumbs down. if shes so pretty y dont we all try to look like her?

8th grade transition explanation?
so basically im the typical 9th grader right now at high school. I look back and i was a normal kid, playing call of duty on ps3, playing tennis, and getting a couple b's and a's in school. I was the lucky-go-happy type of guy. But starting from 8th grade, my pursuit of knowledge just took off. I engaged myself in black holes, darwinism, descartes, galileo, french revolution, ww2, nuclear wars, genes, paramecium,artifical intelligence, gamma ray bursts, space and time fabric, mass extinctions, infinite dimensions, time traveling through warping space and time(through einstein's theories), medieval ages, rome, ancient china, egypt, newton, globalization, politics, health care reforms in U.S. under Obama(anybody know David Lazarus from LA times newspaper?), foreclosures, economy and stocks.I would grab and look for any TIMES magazines or newspaper i could read(especially the business section). I swear, i've seen like every single episode on every series on history channel and national geographic on tv. I mean like knowing and searching for these answers and information literally FELT GOOD. I know like some u guys go like "ewww geek" but no. I was a normal guy in 8th grade with hanging out with some girls. but during the middle of the school year, i just devoted and indulged myself in knowledge. i dont know why. it just felt good to KNOW. Can someone explain wat the hell happened to me? lol...
(p.s. favorite quote: "I think, therefore i am.)
Descartes ftw.8th grade transition explanation?
The answer to your question is that you began to mature. Intelligent adults enjoy life in many different areas. They can "party down" one evening, and watch the History Channel and read Descartes the next, and be equally happy both times. People who respond "Eeeeewww, GEEK!" are themselves immature, and you will spend part of your life wishing that some of them would catch up with you. Some will, but others simply never will, and you will have to leave them behind. But it will be small loss. Being able to enjoy the wonders of science, history, literature, and politics makes you intellectually rich, so relax and enjoy it. (And, by the way, as you move forward in life and get involved with others who have matured intellectually, you'll have plenty of rewarding friendships.)

What is your philosophy on Nuclear submarines and Pandora Tomorrow?
I'm here writing you to warn you about Pandora Tomorrow. Operation pandora tomorrow is the government testing out nuclear subs with both men and women on it. And I'm here to tell you that I'm proof it doesn't work.
It all started when I joined the Navy. I survived sleep deprivation, knife attacks, public humiliation and my CO from hell. This was just battle stations and boot camp. Finally I made it to E5. I was assigned to the nuclear sub in the Pandora Tomorrow project as a fire control man. I learned that working with women is very different. My commanding officer, a women, would sometimes put on her PT gear - that's her gym wear - and shuffle along like a chu-chu train and give me a smile. I think this was her way of submitting to me, very national geographic. Then came shower time. I had to take showers with my flirtatious commanding officer. I couldn't help myself, I did her in the showers. Now my CO's pregnant with my kid and I'm in the brigg (prison). Why? Because my commanding officer changed her mind about what we did. She feels too ashamed about the whole situation and wants to destroy any evidence about left. Thank god my homeboy left me this black berry to warn you that women do not belong on subs. Also, can you contact your local MRA to get me a lawyer. Thanks. And remember, don't trust the women.What is your philosophy on Nuclear submarines and Pandora Tomorrow?
Simply put: No. Women shouldn't be allowed on submarines, if they want to be involved, they can find a functional and critical position in communications. If they truly feel they need to put women on subs then it needs to be an all woman submarine, but I wouldn't suggest that.
It is my personal belief, instilled since childhood by my mother of all people, that men and women are equal, but different. That difference should never be forgotten or our society WILL fail. Men and women differ in body structure, reproduction, strength, thought process, chemical makeup, and spirit.

Another religious question?
Ok, I have asked some questions and have gotten tons of answers and many from folks that are mad. Why would you be mad? why are so trying so hard to prove your point to me and convince me that what you say about God is the truth and that I should take your word for it or is it in fact that you're trying to convince yourself?
In the United States Christianity is the main religion but, if you think about it, it's because where we live and what we were taught. If we lived in another part of the world say , India, we would all be Hindu. They feel just as strongly about their religion as do Christians. The answers I have received haven't been that helpful cause some of you just quote bible verses. I believe that the only time I was ever Truly free was when I was born. After that I had no choices. I didn't even choose my own name, I was told what to believe, what religion I should follow, because, I was told, that's the way it is! I have watched the national geographic specials on Jesus and the bible and have heard from religious scholars who probably know more about religion and the bible than most of you and there are questions yet to be answered even by them.
I'm not trying to disprove anyone or anything and especially any religion. I just sometimes think that we follow certain things blindly cause that's what we were taught and because someone said that's the way it is. Whenever I have asked such questions people chew my head off like it was a personal attack on their belief. If you are strong in your belief and can tell me why without getting angry and make suggestions to me as to where I might find the answer to my questions then great. If you get mad and rant on by quoting bible verses then maybe it's you who are questioning your own beliefs and trying to convince yourself by trying to force your opinion on me.
Look, I have followed blindly my whole life because I was told that this is the way things are and this is the god I am supposed to worship and this is what I am supposed to believe. Nobody ever told me why and when I asked I got, cause god said so. So now that I'm an adult of reason, because god said so or because the bible says so doesn't cut it for me. Sorry, there has to be more to it. There are just too many holes in this story. We all know when Jesus in the bible was born but then he isn't mentioned again until he is thirty. Why don't we know anything of his childhood? It's just things like that. So, I am just seeking here people, asking questions, not trying to disprove. Just trying to understand and because the bible says or cause God says is the same thing I was told when I was a kid. It's almost like when you have a child and they say why do I have to go to bed so early and you say cause I said so. Would you accept that kind of answer today?Another religious question?
It's tough to talk about Jesus in Islamic countries. Virtually every Muslim who has come to follow Christ has done so, first, because of the love of Christ expressed through a supernatural intervention. Now, no religion has more intricate doctrine of angels and visions that Islam, and I think it's extraordinary that God uses that sensitivity to the supernatural world in which he speaks in visions and dreams and reveals himself.
One of India's greatest converts was Sikh, Sundar Singh, who came to know Christ through an appearance of Christ in his room in a dream one night. It had a tremendous impact on his life and he became a Christian. So there are ways that God can reveal himself that go far beyond our understanding.
Now, if God is able to give the word of Christ in various settings in ways we can't even understand, if he's not far from us wherever we are, if he is able to speak through general revelation of creation and through our conscience, then we have to accept the fact that we are without excuse. Every human being will know enough truth so that if they respond to that known truth, God will reveal more to them.
When you go to the book bookstore and look in the biography section, you don't see the same kind of writing that you see in the gospels. When somebody writes a biography these days, they thoroughly delve into the person's life. But look at Mark, he doesn't even talk about the birth of Jesus or really anything through Jesus' early adult years. Instead he focuses on the three-year period and spends half his gospel on events leading up to and culminating in Jesus' last week.
There are two reasons: One is literary and the other is theological. The literary reason is that basically, this is how people wrote biographies in the ancient world. They did not have the sense, as we do today, that it was important to give equal proportion to all periods of an individual's life or that it was necessary to tell the story in strictly chronological order or even to quote people verbatim, as long as the essence of what they said was persevered. Ancient Greek and Hebrew didn't even have a symbol for quotation marks. The only purpose for which they thought history was worth recording was because there were some lessons to be learned from the characters described. Therefore the biographer wanted to dwell at length on those portions of the person's life that were exemplary, that were illustrative, that could help other people, that gave meaning to a period of history.
And what's the theological reason? It flows out of the point I just made. Christians believe that as wonderful as Jesus' life and teachings and miracles were, they were meaningless if it were not historically factual that Christ died and was raised from the dead and that this provided atonement, or forgiveness, of the sins of humanity. So Mark in particular, as the writer of probably the earliest gospels, devotes roughly half his narrative to the events leading up to and including one week's period of time and culminating in Christ's death and resurrection. Given the significance of the Crucifixion, this makes perfect sense in ancient literature.
In your biography do you want to be remebered for your childhood or your accomplishment as an adult. Which is more importantAnother religious question?

I understand what you say and think and it's up to you to sort out your thoughts and make up your own mind as to what you believe, what you accept and what you reject. No one says that you have to believe anything in the bible or any other book of religion, if you can't make up your mind, don't worry about it, basically religion is preparing us for whatever there is after death and whatever there is, we will all go to the same place whatever or wherever it is. I'm sure that if there is a god he/it will non discriminate against you, me or anyone else.
As for me being a parent I do accept that answer. It IS because I said so. I am in charge and as far as I am concerned it is a dictatorship (for now) in my household. Don't aggravate the dictator. Ya know.....hehehe......
Chromeboy whats your question? Maybe it's the way you are wording it. It would be wrong for you to attack others because they believe but you don't. However, YA is full of very defensive people who are not open for dialogue and discussion. They think they should tell you how to believe and if you don't you are wrong. It's not just the religious ones that do this. It's the anti religious and everything in between. You are looking to learn and understand? I think you should search. I think you should question and I think you need to talk to God about that. Word your questions and speech to Him right for the best possible answers. Maybe you don't believe in religion but you believe in God.
You cannot listen to everyone and especially the internet. It is full of such BS. I really think the best thing to do is cut everyone off and get into a communication with God not us. You need to ask questions fine but I really think the best bet is to get off the internet and begin meditating. Is God in a box? If I lived in a box and someone came and shinned light in my box I might believe they are God or at least mightier than me.....don't listen to them.....you can shine light in a box too.....sunscreen

Nuclear Submarines and operation Pandora Tomorrow?
Thanks. And remember, don't trust the women.Nuclear Submarines and operation Pandora Tomorrow?
Are you serious? That is the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard. Any true blooded submariner knows this story is made up! There are over a hundred things wrong with that story, and even if it were true....that just makes you an idiot for going against all the UCMJ articles that you would have to to pull that off.

Why do the hippies protest war on terror in rogue islamic countries and territories like gaza?
Hmmm.. Firstly, I feel they are afraid of losing cocaine supply as most rogue islamic countries are involved and the pressure of becoming a good citizen after that. Secondly, they hate american government for not legalizing drugs in america..! Browse yahoo answers and you'll find these people talking about legalizing drugs.. Wow! Guess what i bought for my neighbor's kid on his birthday? 20 kilos of freshly made cocaine from the estates of pakistan! How can these hippies be eradicated from america before the enemy wins this form of war? If you dont believe that this is a new form of terrorism to strike america then watch national geographic about this form of terror..Why do the hippies protest war on terror in rogue islamic countries and territories like gaza?
I am of the hippie era, and have had hippie friends. Hippies have always taken the position that it is better to get high and make love rather than to fight. Their parents won WWII, and the kids thought war was over for good. Some hippies grew up, and some didn't.
Drugs have a tendency to retard maturation.

Idealistic hedonists thought drugs were harmless. Not so.
Because those are the places where the protesting needs to be done.Why do the hippies protest war on terror in rogue islamic countries and territories like gaza?
Wow, you're a f'ing moron. I was going to answer your question sensibly and address your 'points', but you've already made your mind up, haven't you? You don't care what anyone says, so why bother asking the question? You're an antagonist.Why do the hippies protest war on terror in rogue islamic countries and territories like gaza?
Yeah, the UN condemning Israels actions are hippies. You've sure got the world sussed out man.
IM BLACK. I SUPPORT WAR AND VIOLENCE. I KILL ME AT LEAST 3 CRACKERS DAILY, AND SOME CHINCS ON AVERAGE. LITTLE NIGGS HELLYEA!
Hippies smoke weed and drop acid. Hipsters, investment bankers and ad agents do coke. I don't know any hippies with enough money to keep up a coke habit. Hippies tend to be suspicious of war in general, not just in companies that supply opium; however, if you do your research, you'll find that opium production in Afghanistan actually increased after the overthrow of the Taliban, as they had been fighting its production for religious reasons. Very few people hate the American government because of its drug policy, per se. The problem with its drug policy is that it takes money away from other programs that are just as important. And our policies on torture, suspending constitutional rights because the executive branch feels like it, and war without a congressional Act of War are much more worrisome. I know I won't change your mind, I just don't want others to read your comment and be so misinformed about the realities of American political life.
Not just hippies protest war, and not all 'Hippies' use drugs, not all people who use drugs are 'hippies'.
You use the definition of 'hippie' very widely.This isn't the sixties. Things have changed. You just made a inaccurate moronic generalisation. Except even your stereotype is wrong cos they are normally known to use drugs that are more hallucinogenic than cocaine and also weed.
Maybe they protest against war because of the death of fellow human beings? And hate the American government because of the wars they create..Oh there's a thought... More people should think like that in America, and all over the world.
You are the one who seems to have considered the war in terms of availability of drugs .. dang ! Rehab time!

Have you seen the TV series "Inside 9-11"?
I saw it last night on the National Geographic channel. I was shocked beyond belief of how much intelligence the U.S. had on Bin Laden, yet action was taken only AFTER these crazy people attacked!
As I was realizing this, I turned to my dad and asked, "Who was the president who could have stopped this before it even happened?" (I asked because I was still a younger kid at the time) Bill Clinton.
Have we, as a nation, wrongly blamed George W. Bush? Yes.
You don't have to love Bush, (I don't love Bush) but realize he was president for only five months when he was thrown into the mess Clinton left behind.
You don't have to love the Iraq war either. But still realize this: no matter who the president is, Radical Islam will still hate America and Isreal with a passion. When Bin Laden finally dies, Radical Islam will still live.
Have you seen the TV series "Inside 9-11"?
Finally someone else realizes its Clinton...we were attacked while he was president numerous times and he did NOTHING about it. That lead to Sept 11, and look now the Democrats want to pull us out. We are defending our country, and we can't just get up and leave. I have family that re-enlisted to go back to Iraq because we NEED to be there.
Clinton had the chance to get Osama Bin Ladin and passed it up and we paid the price for it on 9/11.Have you seen the TV series "Inside 9-11"?
Yes, people forget the first World Trade Center bombing. Part of the fault lies in the way intelligence agencies keep their info 'close to the vest', a problem which is part of human nature.
Have you seen the TV series "Inside 9-11"?
Couldn't have said it any better.
You need to look into this a hell of a lot more pal...

Do prisons actually work?
I have been watching this documentary called "lockdown" on Neflix lately. So first of all, I have never been to prison (I'm 17) and I do NOT plan to go there EVER (it sounds like it really really sucks) so the only observation I have made of it is through this T.V. show. My friend's stepdad (who is a very nice guy) went to prison for something with drugs back about a year ago. But my friend never talks about it. But when he came back from jail, he was the same man. So frankly, all I know about the U.S. prison system is someone who went to prison and from a few episodes of a National Geographic documentary. But my observation was, it works for some people, but most people are actually propelled into a deeper life of crime as a consequence of the exposure to more violent and immutable criminals. It seems as if prison is a place where criminals learn to be tougher criminals, and where people who really need mental rehabilitation and therapy are cast into a world where they are beat down for being a coward and mocked because of a low position on the prison's hierarchy. For instance, this one (really creepy) 19 year old cowardly kid was sent to prison for threatening osmeones life with a knife. But when he arrived, his social awkwardness brought him pain and mockery. His akwardness was reinforced, and his violent tendencies were exacerbated becasue of the fact that he was unfamiliar with the harsh prison society. We all know that he did a crime that is ethically nearly unforgivable in a way, but did this really help him for when his 15 year sentence is up?
They say that the main problem is what happens after the criminal is released from prison. That a large portion of them end up back in prison becasue threy repeat the behavior that sent them there. Most people have trouble adjusting to a new life, and several people develop a social anxiety to the people in the real world. Why have we not set up a rehabiliation program that helps offenders properly reenter society? Another question, why do we as a society condemn post correctional offenders and make it harder for them to gt a decent job? How do we fix this? What REALLY happens to a criminal when they are released from a multi-year sentence?
I am not going to set up this quesitonf or those of you Eurotrolls who want to talk about how Europes system is better than America's system. Unless you want to provide citable sources that prove this, do NOT mention it!
Again, I have very little knowledge on the american prison system, but my only observations are from a TV show. So any more info would be great! :)|||The Department of Corrections, no matter what state it is, is corrupt. People try to say that the main goal of prison is to "rehabilitate" offenders, but that is not what prison does. Society thinks that prison is this fabulous place that gives inmates free food, housing, television, and luxury items at the tax payers' expense, but in all reality, it is not like that. The majority of prisons don't have televisions in them, and if they do, they cost a lot of money at the commissary. Luxury items are limited to bars of soup, packages of ramen soup, small containers of ice cream, candy bars, and books to read, and you can only buy them if you, as the inmates say, have money on your books. While these things make doing time easier if you're lucky enough to have outside support, it doesn't restore the inmate's freedom, or the colors one misses while incarcerated. The atmosphere in prison is not only violent and angry, but it's stressful, racist, hateful, and exhausting. There's no such thing as friends or loyalty in a penitentiary. The constant fights and guards' degrading takes a tole on one's mind, as does spending time in administrative segregation, or solitary confinement as some call it. OC gas in your eyes is painful, as is being tased and administered pepper spray. You become a slave to the system, and violence is the only thing you know. You learn the rules and follow them. You do what you have to do to survive. Society doesn't care about you, and time passes by. It's as if you cease to exist. In people's minds, you are nothing but a dangerous hazard that it now locked up and taken care of. When you get out, the world is blinding. Technology doesn't ask your permission to advance, and current events don't stop just because you got locked up. There are new faces to see, new things to discover, new products to learn about, and new facts to read up on. You have to get used to the colors of the world again, and not having bars or doors or barbed wire surrounding you. You have to fit in with normal society, but now, you have an even stronger hatred for everything around you. The way things work in prison is not the same as it is in the free world, but you know no other way. Then, without family or friends to help you, and criminal background checks ruining your life, your only option is to turn to crime. Thus, you return to the system. In and out, out and in; it's a vicious cycle that destroys your mind and exhausts your body. It's fun to dance with the devil, but after you've done your time and you're back out into the real world, you're still not free; you're trapped within your own mind, still incarcerated. The ways of prison are forever in you, and that becomes your lifestyle. Your cell mate becomes your family, and prison becomes your home.
What REALLY happens to an offender that is released after serving several years? Well, for me, it went like this: I reached the end of my sentence earlier this year, was given a few bucks from the guards, got on a bus, and went back to my hometown, not that I knew anyone. I'd never had friends or family, and the situation hadn't changed. I looked at the money in my hand and went into a store. I bought some pizza, a pair of jeans, a new shirt, and a hoodie, because my old clothes from when I was 18 didn't fit the 24 year old I was now. I changed into the new clothes, dumped the old in a trash can, and wandered around the neighborhood, observing what had changed. Lots of things were different, but I had no desire to let the new products and places intimidate me. Not yet. So as I roamed from one street to the next, I spent the remainder of my money at a bowling alley and decided to play a game. There, I met my first two friends in my entire life. We started talking, and then started hanging out together. I had no ties to anything; it was me against the world. Still now, a couple of months later, I'm afraid to tell my friends that I've been in prison and had previous arrests before that. I'm still an angry, hateful person, and I still carry out criminal acts. Now it's either for the thrill of it, or for money. I'm homeless, broke, and bored with life. Mine's going nowhere, and even though I fill out job applications constantly, they're always denied. I'm almost certain there's a warrant out for me, but I'm just waiting until after my birthday in early January to turn myself in. I'm going back to prison, for one reason or another. One minute I'll be charged with first degree murder, the next second degree armed robbery. Or maybe they'll decide to stick on a resisting arrest and public intoxication charge. And because I have a gun, a switchblade, and brass knuckles on me, they'll add criminal possession of a firearm and possession of illegal weapons to the charge. Maybe I'll be drunk at the time, and they'll put on one count of public intoxication. Prison does not work. At all. That's the shortest, simplest, easiest way to put it.|||1 other thing, Jay. As a disclaimer. DO NOT continue to do these criminal acts. You will end back in prison. You really do sound like you have potential, you just need to keep trying to make it on the outside world. You have no excuses at this point. And get rid of the gun and the knife
|||It is up to the criminal if he wants to change or not. You can enroll in the best school but learn nothing unless you are willing to learn. If those people are unwilling to change, then there is nothing you can do for them.|||It takes dangerous people off the streets, so yes it works.|||Prisons are a waste of money if they keep anyone except those psychopaths who cannot be reasoned with in them.
The government loves locking non-violent people(drug users) with more dangerous people so they can get stabbed/raped.|||You can't really compare our prison system with that of Europe's without comparing the entire criminal justice systems. Our criminals have far more protections, have the right to remain silent, the right to speak with an attorney, the right to a speedy trial, and the presumption of innocence. (Tell the Eurotrolls (love that term, by the way) to take a look at how the Italian justice system treated Amanda Knox. She was jailed for an extended period before criminal charges were even filed.)
Anyway. This really isn't the venue to give you the detailed answer but I'll try and give you a nutshell answer because I love the fact a 17 year old is asking a question and looking for insight.
If you look at (Google) for the history of corrections in this country you will see that we have tried a number of different techniques: Colonial (1600s-1790s); Penitentiary (1790s-1860s); Reformatory (1870s-1890s); Progressive (1890s-1930s); Medical (1930s-1960s); Community (1960s-1970s); Crime Control (1970s-Present)
Of everything we've tried, Crime Control is what we've found makes the most sense. Only a small percentage of the population commits the vast majority of the crimes. And you cannot rehabilitate someone who does not choose to be rehabilitated. Every prison facility offers educational and vocational opportunities to non-violent offenders - but an inmate who doesn't want to take advantage of those opportunities isn't going to.
In our Crime Control system, offenders don't go to prison for minor offenses or even first offenses (unless they seriously hurt or kill someone). They are given many opportunities and they have to make some deliberate choices to get to the point where they are serving time in prison.
The 19 year old to whom you are referring didn't just get 15 years for threatening someone with a knife. He has a serious history and the intimidation with a weapon charge was the straw that broke the camel's back.
If you have interest in doing independent research, I'd recommend that you read "The Hot House" which is an account of a reporter about USP Leavenworth. And also a book called: "Games Criminals Play." (Sorry, but I can't remember the names of either author. Both are interesting and very readable books though. I read them both when I was in college, and I still remember them.)
