Show on Nat Geo called 'Brain Child' mentioned study about playing games with kids to make them smarter. link?

I was watching a show called Brain

Child on National Geographic (

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/PT/popup/200709182200.html

), and in it they mentioned a study that a few psychologists put

togerther. They worked with children (from poor families) from birth to

about five years old. They played games and puzzles with them that they

thought would increase the childrens' intelligence. Supoosedly the

majority of them surpassed their peers and grew up with a love of learning.

Do you know anything about this study? Who did the study? What the

name of it was? A link to an article? What kind of games they played?Show on Nat Geo called 'Brain Child' mentioned study about playing games with kids to make them smarter. link?
The Abecedarian Project

"The Abecedarian project was a carefully controlled scientific study of the potential benefits of early childhood education for poor children. Four cohorts of individuals, born between 1972 and 1977, were randomly assigned as infants to either the early educational intervention group or the control group.

Children from low-income families received full-time, high-quality educational intervention in a childcare setting from infancy through age 5.

Each child had an individualized prescription of educational activities.

Educational activities consisted of "games" incorporated into the child's day.

Activities focused on social, emotional, and cognitive areas of development but gave particular emphasis to language.

Children's progress was monitored over time with follow-up studies conducted at ages 12, 15, and 21.

The young adult findings demonstrate that important, long-lasting benefits were associated with the early childhood program."

I still teach about this work in my educational psychology courses...LJFShow on Nat Geo called 'Brain Child' mentioned study about playing games with kids to make them smarter. link?
This was the Abecedarian Project, done at the FPG Child Development Institute at UNC-CH. The link to the university website about this project is: www.fpg.unc.edu/~abc/

The activities used are the LearningGames -- you can find these on this site (among others): www.mindnurture.com/research.cfm

a lot of the games are basic early childhood games including things like peek-a-boo -- a large focus on the adult-child interaction and oral language aspects and emphasizing the importance as play as the best vehicle for learning for very young children.

  • I think I'm related by blood to Jesus.. he had a wife and kids?

so.. I was tracing my lineage back, and I'm pretty damn positive that I'm a direct blood descendent of Jesus. Yes, he had a wife, and children. We have familial records dating back 1500 years, and then other documents (that someone took great care in preserving). It's awesome! Should i tell national geographic.I think I'm related by blood to Jesus.. he had a wife and kids?
    "Should i tell national geographic."

Only if you enjoy being laughed at.
hehe.....no.I think I'm related by blood to Jesus.. he had a wife and kids?
First contact a therapist. You are ill.I think I'm related by blood to Jesus.. he had a wife and kids?
    Sober up first.
you are positive in a lie then. read your bible. stop being stupid. or you will go on TV and be proven stupid.
    Wrong
no because you would look pretty foolish, just like now.
Look, just because your last name is Christ...

(I know that Christ is not a proper name - it was a joke.)

I think I read somewhere that one in ten Asians (or something) is a descendant of Genghis Kahn. Of course, he had a reputation. We're all supposed to believe that "Jesus" never "went backstage behind the meat curtains," so people get a little more touchy when you suggest that maybe you're one of his progeny.
    what??!

you dated your lineage back 1500 years ago?

    get a life!!

i assume you have nothing better to do with your time than dream of the fame you'll get from national geographic
There is one way to check....crucify yourself and make sure you are buried in a cave. If you come back to life than you're records might be accurate...if you don't well....that would kinda suck...
Maybe you are and maybe you aren't. The Christian's are going to want to tar and feather you for even suggesting such a thing. Better lock your doors and watch your back.
watch "the da vinci code" one too many times?
Sorry but your not....500 years short....
Absolutely. If you can prove the Grail line go for it. It's about time some early Christian coverups get blown wide open so it can get back to its roots - not the perverted form that exists today.
If you paid for this info. then you were ripped off. I'd get my money back. How about if you stop with the blastphemy and try real hard to grow up? This is so ridiculous that it is off the charts. You sure made up a doozy. How old are you------early teen?
1500 years would be about 500 years short. But I am sure you crack you up.
If your family records date back 1500 years, that means your ancestor Jesus was born 500 years after the Christ Jesus of Nazareth, so.... no one cares.
Again, you are "deluted". And wanting attention and reaction, Jesus' Bride IS The Holy Church Body!! (For your "finite" mind, you cannot comprehend, STILL, because you do not Believe in Him yet!!) So sorry you are so sad.
We're all related to Jesus. He was God's son and we're all children of God.
you've been davincicoded you should see a doctor
i get sick and tired of people how think Jesus had a wife well he didn't.if he did the new testiment would have spoken about it.
No! First you should go here!

    significant other- Mary Magdalene

    daughter- Sarah

He was a *man* entitled to a life.
yeah! go ahead and tell them. dont for get to mention the fact that you invented Tv dinners and the microwave
ok 1. Kings family trees dated back to jesus but they were proberbly false.

    2. Jesus was baptised without sin because it was it was a commandmant why not obey the commandment go forth and multiply too ?

    3. Send it off too a professional and see what they say

if your on the news could u send me your autograph cos that would be cool.

    4. There was a man called Joseph Smith a while back who claimed to be a desendant of Jesus and a phrophet.

People still believe his words today.

Go for it - what have u got 2 loose ?
He wasnt married, and since Christ died 2000 years ago i would keep looking. So my answer is no, they would tear you apart.
kind of ironic huh? You could be related to Jesus through His shed blood- interesting no wife and kids, but we can be God's children through His blood
Jesus Christ never had a wife and neither had childeren

You are a direct descendant of your parents only. Before them it doubled every generation like 4,8,16,32,64,128 and so on. 20 generations will give you a million anscestors so what is direct about that?

When walking in the rain without suitable cover such as umbrella, why human priortise to cover their head?

Seem that human all over the world opted and try their best to cover their head and let the rest of their body wet! I also have seen an ape do the similar thing by getting a big leaf to cover their head during a National Geographic Society documentary film. If we dont have any suitable cover available, why not just walk in the rain without trying to cover the head even with our own hand! - just like kids having fun in the rain! Why should we cover our head whilst the whole body is batterred by the rain? It does'nt make sense! When walking in the rain without suitable cover such as umbrella, why human priortise to cover their head?
Human recognise the head as the most important part of the body where brain, hear, smell, vision, taste, etc., reside. Therefore, first safety reaction is to save the head and that why we always cover our head in the rain! We dont do that if we accept the rain as non threat, just walk in the rain and having fun. Nevertheless, what ape does is something to ponder on - who follow who?
Same as missourim, the head is where most of your body heat escapes from, so if it gets wet you will feel chilled more easily than elsewhere. When walking in the rain without suitable cover such as umbrella, why human priortise to cover their head?
sometimes it's raining so badly that i can't see where i'm walking unless i cover my head (or my eyes at least), and it get cold if my shoulders get wet, so covering your head just sort of covers both your eyes and shoulders! sometimes i do just run out and get wet like a kid having fun in the rain, and that is a lot of fun, but other times i dont like going thru the rest of the day with wet clothes. When walking in the rain without suitable cover such as umbrella, why human priortise to cover their head?
well personally i would cover my head to protect my eyes keep water from dripping in my face .. its hard to see when you have rain drops pelting you in the face!
Usually in the rain we have a coat on, etc. I use an umbrella to keep the rain off my head and from getting my hair soaked, not to mention making my makeup run down my face.

Excuse me, but kind of a silly question.
Primal instinct, ever watch gorillas during a rainstorm on the discovery channel?Covering their heads with leaves, they look pretty stupid ,I bet our umbrellas look stupid to them too.......
To prevent hypothermia. Uncovered and particularly wet heads loose an inordinate amount of body heat compared to the rest of the body. It's a survival instinct.
i have two theories...1....the rain will get in your eyes, making it difficult to see...and 2, we females just got our hair done and want to attract the male species by looking our best...(even the female gorillas want to look good for their mates)
because...most would have the notion that rain falls vertically and would hit the head first. If we cover the head then the droplets won't hit what's below the head. well, most of it. i guess that's the reasoning behind covering one's head. I mean, if you covered your feet, the parts above the feet would get wet, right?
keep it out of the eyes

also makes a mess of hair that is usually styled
It is to protect your VISION! Rain in the eyes can blur vision, and as a instinct going back to the apes, what you can't see can eat you!
I think it does make sense for several reasons:

    1. the greatest amount of heat is lost through the scalp;

    2. water runs down the hair onto the neck, into the eves, nose, ears - thus interfering with our primal methods of communication;

    3. hair on the back of the neck and upper back is small and very sensitive to changes in temperature and rain is uncomfortable here because such sensations cause a primal need for shelter to come to the forefront of our territorial and comfort needs.
it actually is just a involuntary mental reaction,

just as one pulls up his legs when sitting in a chair and a bucket of water is splashed on the floor., in the same way we tend to cover our heads when we are in rain, and the same principle applies to apes also.

Is safe-site.com is redirect virus or my browser is hacked?

I want to go on facebook, and I got redirected to some little kid website or fbi-kids or national geographic After a couple times of this happening, I noticed my address bar changed to "safe-site.com" I did a virus scan with avast, superantispyware, malwarebytes and many more but my computer turned up clean.

What do I do about my Christian sister?

We have reunited after being separated at an early age.It is great to see her and catch up on 35 years but she is totally 'born again' christain with all the fanaticism that implies.Last year I sent her and her kids a National geographic subscription but she declined it because it occasionally has articles on evoluttion and such and she figures I am trying to brainwash her kids. She is always trying to convert me and it is getting to the point where I FEEL LIKE GIVING UP ON HER!!What do I do about my Christian sister?
The harder you try to convince her, the more likely they are to strengthen their beliefs....I'm not sure why this is true, but I have observed it often....Just attempt to gain real incite into who she is, Christianity and all....
I hope she doesn't give up on youWhat do I do about my Christian sister?
Well, if you want the communication to stay open, you should have a conversation with each other on agreeing to disagree, (if you have not already done so). If not, then she does not value you as a sibling, or as a friend. What do I do about my Christian sister?
you must accept her as she is.

If you found out that she had schizophrenia instead, you'd give her the benefit of the doubt.

Just explain her unfortunate situation to the rest of your family and do the best you can.
I know how frustrated you must be, but if you value having her in your life, try to let it go. Try telling her firmly that you have no interest in converting, but you do want to be a part of her life.

    I hope that helps!
um....isnt she the one brainwashing her kids by not letting them devlop their own opinions about things? tell her you do not want to change your religion and that it does not affect HER if you are different. good luck
just avoid the topic if she insists on bringing it up then yeah i don't see how you could continue your friendship
Have a talk with your sister, get to terms where you guys can be mutualy accepting of each other.
Kindly tell her, that you are quite happy with where you are in life thank you, and that you love being reunited with her, however to please keep her personal religious experiences to herself and you will refrain from trying to "corrupt" her children.
You have to decide; your sanity or a relationship with your sister!

I stopped seeing my sister years ago because my sanity was more important. She now e mails me religion and chain letters. Delete, delete, delete.
to hell with her if she dosnt accept you as the way you are that is a lifestyle and she cannot change that you are the only one who can do that. My girlfriend is Wiccan and i am christain we have religion fights but we get over it...
She means well of course, but have you told her how it makes you feel? Talk it out so you can continue to have a relationship.

I don't understand why she would reject National Geographic.
shes kind of pushing it on hard, if you dont feel comfterable with that its ok, a lot of people dont, if you really are thinking about converting dont do it because of pressure. ;)
Why dont you open your mind and listen to her point of view and try to understand why she believes instead of just making up your mind on the subject, You are not going to change her, but you can at least try to understand her
    Repent, and believe the Gospel.
She is brainwashed. Actually, you should let her have her own life, but she should respect your life as well - and respect of others is not a trait of conservative Christians. Sorry.
It doesn't matter what you say or think . Your sister is going to be what she is. So, you have to accept that and forget about it. On the other hand, you have to let her know in no uncertain terms that her lifestyle cannot be yours. And that she is starting to alienate you and that is the last thing you want. So, be honest with her and maybe your friendship can continue.
You will need to talk to her and explain that you love her but the subject of religion is going to be off limits. However it may be too hard for her to keep this pact. You will have to repeatedly tell her you care but that you do not want to talk about religion
Just keep trying, eventually she'll realize that she cant change you and that you don't want to change her. I'm Pagan and my mother is Christian, though she doesn't agree with my beliefs we still have learned to agree to disagree. I just stood my ground but showed her I wouldn't give up on our relationship. I wish y'all much luck, don't give up on y'alls relationship I truly believe it will get better if for you. Blessed be.
Well, I'm a Christian..I'm not sure what you mean by "All the fanaticism" that comes with being a born again Christian. I think that you are right, in her being close-minded with the stuff about evolution, just because it's helpful to know what it's about. I'm not an evolutionist, and don't think it's right, but I do like National Geographic magazines, and they talk a lot about other stuff as well. You should talk to her, personally, and help her understand your intent behind it all. -Also-, I think that you should look at yourself. You see that it's your sister and all, but it almost seems like you have this prejudice against Christians...maybe it's a justified prejudice, based on your past or something, but not all Christians are the same. I think..you should look at her and think, "Alright, if she's -THIS- fanatical about Jesus, and she lives her life like this -SO- strongly..maybe there is something more to it that I have overlooked?" I understand that past experiences with Christians sometimes really veers you away from it, but I don't think it would be wise on your part to give up on Christianity, nor your sister. I mean this in the best of ways, and sorry if I worded anything wrong, God bless! :)
I feel for you, as there is nothing you can do but grim and bear it, or walk away.

I converted to Judaism from Christianity, and for the rest of their lives my parents were at me-showing me churches I could start going to, telling me how I was going to hell if I didn't come back to the church, how I did not honor them as the Bible said I should because I would not come back to the Church, etc.,. It made life miserable for all of us for 35 years. I still have very bad emotions about it.

You will never change her mind.
If you love your sister, ....how can you give up on her?
    Don't give up on her.

It was really nice to get her a thoughtful gift, but I understand the reason she wouldn't want it. I feel the same way about evolution. It bugs me to go to museums where they say the earth is millions of years old etc...Or read in publications "facts" that are not substantiated.

Anyway I hope you keep in touch with her. Let her know that you understand that it is because she cares about you that she tells you about salvation. Ask her to agree to disagree. Let her know that you don't mind if she prays for you. (If you don't mind).

Hope things get better and you keep in touch with her. I imagine if you are kind to her and let her know how you feel she will understand.

I know with my unsaved family members all I can do is love them and pray for them and hope that they will seek the truth of God's Word in their lives. I as a Christian am compelled to do so, because I really believe this stuff! I have studied the bible for many years now and know that because of irrefutable evidence that it is truth.

  • When you see freakishly smart kids, do you feel sick to your stomach?

I was watching the National Geographic Bee this afternoon (yes I was bored and had nothing else better to do!) and most of the kids on there looked like they were still in middle school, yet they were answering questions about countries I鈥檝e never even heard of, let alone pronounce or spell. Needless to say, I sure felt pretty dumb after watching that. But at least I got a good laugh out of it: one kid kept holding his answer card upside down and another tripped over his chair and busted his a rse ahahahaha. They definitely don鈥檛 have much common sense, that鈥檚 for sureWhen you see freakishly smart kids, do you feel sick to your stomach?
I feel angry, especially if it's my friend because we're oh so competitive in society now. Especially in these schools, I remembered when I had to apply for high schools I didn't get in this school because I failed this test and it was a subject 2 years above my grade level.

Hmm, at least I'm still taking advanced classes. ;P
Nah cus im 1When you see freakishly smart kids, do you feel sick to your stomach?
no i feel like slapping them vry hard several timesWhen you see freakishly smart kids, do you feel sick to your stomach?
No I feel freakishly stupid..I'm twice their age and don't know those answers...pay attention in school kids....
