The magazines appear to be almost identical and neither has any ads in it. As a parent, is there one magazine that you prefer over the other? Both are aimed at the age group that my daughter is in.National Geographic Kids or Ranger Rick?

If you are looking for ANY good kids' mag, not necessarily entirely nature-focused, I really like Chirp/Chickadee/Owl.
We do have a subscription to NG "Kids" and we like it, but it is skewed young -- my daughter is 4 and it is age-appropriate but not for much longer, I don't think -- and it is sort of short/small? I got Ranger Rick as a kid and it was for older kids, and a lot longer, I _think_?National Geographic Kids or Ranger Rick?
My son gets the one in the Ranger Rick series that is for younger kids (Your big backyard) and he loves it. My other son gets Highlights. Also loves it.
Just ask your daughter which one she would rather have. Either way, you can't go wrong.National Geographic Kids or Ranger Rick?
We subscribe to both. They are not identical at all- perhaps in style, but not in content.
