What do you know about child brides?

I was reading an article online from national geographics about child brides. I think it said it was in India. And i just thing that is so horrible. A girl was ten, and the man she was married was 50. Thats disgusting. WHY IN THE WORLD would a 50 year old man even WANT to marry a kid?

In case you want to look it up, the national geographic article i read was called Child Brides: To Young to Wed. Or at least, it was called. something like that. If you want, ill try to find it again and post the link. What do you know about child brides?
Don't be ignorant and ethnocentric. You cannot judge another culture by your own standards. That's their tradition and their way of life, so who are you to judge? I'm sure they would frown on you for many of the things you do in your life.
Do you know nothing of history?

It's tradition. Usually the daughter was given to the man her father picks for her after she starts her period, but the man is picked before that. Sometimes it's for money because those parts of India are low income, sometimes it's to create ties between families.

EVERY culture at some point has done arranged marriages and child marriages. That includes counties in Europe like France and Great Britain. What do you know about child brides?
Child brides are also a common occurence very close to home, but it just goes unpublicized for the most part. It's happening in the stae of Utah and also in Bountiful, British Columbia. Yes, I am referring to the FLDS sect of the Mormon church. Members of this church believe in having as many wives in order to be able to have as many children as possible. Some have reportedly more than 80 wives and many marry these children when they are barely in their teens. What's more, incest is common in these families.
It is a very sad situation indeed, whether it is occuring here or in other countries. What do you know about child brides?
For them it's tradition and part of their culture. Something that has been done for generations. Until the rest of the world saw it and thought HOW AWFUL because it didn't fit in with their values and beliefs. Personally I do think it is a bad practice and should be stopped ASAP. It's not fair on the child or the adult either. Mostly the child. They lose their innocence and childhood in one fell swoop. I think it also stems from that males can have kids at any age but females can't and so the younger the better for producing heirs and what not. I'm for stopping it.
it is a cultural thing - something they do there.

it would never happen in the usa.

they have always done it.

it does not make it right.

it should be stopped.

but, like a lot of things in the world, it takes more then thoughts to change things.

it takes action.

and, as long as people think it is normal (like they do in their cultural) it will not change.

until someone takes a stand.

peace.
I just read that article - heartbreaking. I wish success to the advocates currently working in those countries and regions to end the practice of child marriage.
I read the same article.
The problem, as I seemed to interpret the article, is that the countries where this is happening tend to be ones that don't have the sense of security that some of us reading your question do.
The article mentioned that men have been known to rape a child, making her "unwanted" by a future spouse then they come along and marry her. What is worse to these people in their culture? Rape then marriage, or the family cooperating and selecting someone they see as suitable in order to avoid the rape of their child?

As someone in the USA, I am appalled at the thought of it. There do seem to be some groups making strides to improve the situation for girls in these countries %26amp; I certainly support their efforts. It is going to take a culture shift in the mindset of the parents of these kids, AND the support of law enforcement to protect the children and prevent underage marriages. Sadly that is going to take time, hard work, and resources that are not always available.

And I have to disagree with "TheOne" that it would never happen here. Have you not read about the polygamist sects that have had young girls married off to church elders at very young ages? It HAS happened here, and not 100 years ago. It may still be going on, but under even more secrecy that we haven't found out about it.
